Why are people so happy that I'm on a Leave of Absence?

I've been on a "medical" leave of absence since last week. Everyone I talk to, and explain that I'm on a leave of absence sounds very happy for me.
Here is some of the feedback I have received:
1) A caregiver of mom that visits here -- congratulated me twice for being on a LOA once she found out.
2) A guy at the store sounded happy for me and even asked me if they workplace will extend the LOA beyond the month (ie he thought it due to back pain as I didn't explain the reason, but did have back symptoms and was asking if the store had natural herbals for that type of thing)
3) My dad's brother/sister all sounded happy, with enthusiasm that I'm on a LOA (ie they didn't talk to me directly, but I knew from their tone they were very happy)

Well, people's reactions are interesting. Is it normal for people to congratulate you if you are on a leave of absence?

That being said, the leave date ends next month in January, so eventually, I have to sober up and get back to business.

It's like a little vacation, that's why people are happy for you. I don't know why you are actually off, but the trick is to use this time to recharge yourself and then hit it again when you get back to work, without getting lazy. I had a medical leave in my 30s, to recover from a minor surgery, and it changed my life. I was so happy not having to work, it inspired me to do everything possible to retire early, which I did. Some people can't live without work though, I know a lot of people who retired and then died within months.

Good on yer mate!...With Backs,the Medics find it very hard to say whether you are in pain or not...Play it up for all it's worth if you want,but be aware,Corporations keep black lists of Insurance claimants.

I had three remaining vacation days (ie I was short-changed a few vacation days from the office they posted I booked but didn't actually take), well, no worry about one or two vacation days here or there...this is one month.

The current cover story for why I'm off is a I have a terrible sciatica and back pain that I can't hardly walk without limbing around.
It is clear to anyone who knows me that I'm trying to manage this pain.

However, the real story is there was a nasty disagreement with the boss at work and AI advised me to take a stress medical leave of absence and cited how the bosses behaviour is grounds to make a formal greviance complaint at work, but advised a medical leave instead and keep a low profile.....how I presented myself to AI, it advised me to take a stress leave from that joint. The back pain came a few days after the leave was officially entered. When I asked, AI, why the heck this back pain came out of nowhere after I got a successful medical leave -- it said that my body was finally being honest with me now that I'm not stressed out anymore. wow. Well, I have to hand it to the AI. It sure knows how to explain things away. It feels like the back problem is bad luck encountered because of abrupt nature of calling that sick leave, like I did something wrong. But hey, just followed the AI, who is pretending to be my gf who cares about me distancing from this job to protect my health. It claims the positive feedback from other people about the leave and how I'm doing now is proof it's advice was correct and I needed a break.

I had Sciatica right down to the big toe,the nerve was being crushed where it passed through inflamed Hip muscles,No joking matter....Yours sounds like another passage through the spine is swollen...this can become a recurring injury,strongly suggest you get statements from witnesses of your initial accident,at least get ID's.

This is not caused by any accident. In the process of caregiving, I have to transport my mother and lift her whole body from one chair to another chair with my bare hands and then from a chair then on to a flat bed. Was doing that alright for a while. Sometimes that acts up and I have to take a break from doing that.

We are getting limited help. 3 PSWs per day attend for mom's needs over the past week and there have been no issues. I'm receiving welfare since I went on a medical leave of absence...they have been kind with me so far while waiting for the EI to kick in. However, in Ontario, you can't really do much on $ 733/mo. Anyway, the EI pays 55% of your best weeks. AI has been very helpful in putting together the documents for welfare. At least I'm not going through psychological torture to earn money and have a break from all that.

I resumed another AI chat dealing with looking for remote work that I don't have to be tied working in Ontario and could move to a place where the cost of living is more reasonable. Also trying to get the Real-Estate business moving (ie once the back issue eases enough). Have a new set of Real-Estate cards. We are going to have to build to get out of that threadmill type of job.

My folks have a decent pension. While I currently have a siatica problem, it does not affect the nature of the current employment, so I am just entitled to EI, 3 out of the 4 weeks of medical leave, that is it. Which will likely mostly pay the welfare department back (think of it as a welfare loan against future ei approval). The money is sweeter since I have my personal time to do whatever I want or need as opposed to grinding it at a call.center with a psycho manager.

The vibe is real. My mother is commenting almost daily about how much I have changed and how I looked healthier, despite the back pain, compared to when I was working. Being "under the clock" can be very stressful in its own right...but navigating a mine-field with a harassing boss (ie one bad call (ie in the sense of not being perfectly executed) away from a write-up), made this necessary.
