It'll be really simple; just ask about the time of year when everyone starts talking about it. (One year I actually got my date 4 days before the prom. I don't reccommend waiting that long.)
Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.
