About four years ago, I worked a year (during my gap year out) in construction. I was a rooftiler. This is in England, so we're talking lots of very old roofs and restoration work (as well as new building developments).
I think working construction is a great way to be a better man. I've spent my summers (when I'm back at home) doing this for the last four years since that gap year experience. Without mentioning the gains you'll make in muscle and strength (especially if you're labouring for a craftsman or something), the testosterone and manliness displayed in this profession is huge and will increase your's by osmosis. The commaradarie is amazing if you can find a great group of guys to work with.
There's nothing like being on top of a roof with the sun on your back, hammer in hand, looking out across that bird's eye view of the city, with that toughness in your eyes that can only come from paying your dues on a building site.
