I personally hated it. But that's just me. I know plenty of people that will not do any other job (keep in mind we're all relatively young and don't have college degrees yet).
The money can be good, as long as you work at a decent place. If you work at a buffet restaurant you won't make any money, but if you work at a nice joint the tips can be worth it.
I personally can not STAND rude customers. And that's a lot of what you have to deal with when you wait tables. I took a job where the customers can never even talk to me unless I let them. That's how much I hate customer service.
But if you can handle people *****ing at you all day, the money is much better than what I do.

I am a server now in a classy yet reasonably priced place. Our most expensive meal is just under $30 and we sell lots of wines and martinis. Unless there is a bad snow or ice storm that keeps people in I always make well over $20 an hour. I've waitressed at extremely busy restaurants with inexpensive food that had a very high turn over before...and you can make good money there, but the pace can be rough and the side work usually takes a long time. I work at a higher priced place now (but not so high it doesn't get busy) and the pace is slower, turnover is slower, much easier sidework and a much more laid back attitude. You can make good money at these places, too. If you work in a better place you will need to know proper server etiquette...like how to properly open a bottle of wine, for example. It's easy, though...just takes practice. If you want to wait tables you should first decide which kind of environment you want to work in. The chain restaurants are usually worse environments to work in with a very high turnover rate. The privately owned local places are usually better to work at.
