I just got rid of this son of a b1tch virus.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-vista-2010

Bros, beware of this thing. it disguises itself as windows security to attempt to scare you into buying the fake program.

It was annoying as all hell. Pop up every two minutes telling me I'm "infected!" with legit programs. Ignored it until this morning, but the bastard even blocks programs. it would not let me start firefox, changed my settings, and wouldn't let me run the anti malware to kill it. I had to run Rkill first to stop it and then get rid of the thing.

Luckily it didn't progress further than that, but I was researching it online and some people report turning off their computer and having the virus forever trap them on the login screen and blocking the desktop. it also logs itself onto the internet and downloads crap onto your computer

you can get it from a lot of places, most notably the usual suspects (Porn sites and file sharing) but I don't know where I got mine. I think my sister might have downloaded it by accident. She saw something about a "scanner" which is one way it can hide itself. The virus usually disguises itself as an update, so be careful guys

As always make sure your protection software is up to date

anyone else have experience with this virus or others like it?

No sh*t.

This is why you don't download random things off the internet. No, I've never had any problems because I don't download random things off the internet. Lock down the install rights on your sister's account. Make her a regular user instead of giving her admin rights.

Make sure before installing things that:
1. The file is legit from a good publisher. Go to their website. If they don't have one, then its probably shady and you're taking a risk.
2. Google it to make sure it's not a piece of crap like you downloaded.

In a related issue, i advise you guys to never ever use Google Chrome... I learned this the hard way : it isn't up-to-date in anti-malware/spyware protection.

It has the worst security features, although it is fast for a browser.

I think he means it has vulnerabilities that other browsers may not have.

I agree with Alle_Gory, some people (kids, women :p ) just shouldn't have admin access to a computer.

Besides phoning home to Google headquarters about your browsing habits, it's pretty secure. It also can't run ActiveX so that takes care of one vulnerability. The other problem is the gaping security holes in Adobe Flash which affects all browsers.

I can attest to this. I downloaded google chrome and started using it instead of firefox. Not soon after my virus/adware scan started finding stuff on my computer. Too bad because it's a really fast browser and I really liked it but i rather not put my computer at risk.

Besides that why would you use the browser from a company which is out to get all your info and gives your info to the govt? If you care about privacy you shouldn't be using google products.

You are putting your computer at risk. It's a browser. It doesn't do anything unless you tell it to. If you've got too much infected junk, then don't download it in the first place.

Firefox doesn't have these "protections" you're so worried about. It's also just a browser. But don't believe me, shoot the Mozilla developers an email or go to their forums and ask this question. Once they stop laughing, you might get a serious answer. (Mozilla is the foundation that makes Firefox).
