For the umpteenth time, I was watching clips from the movie "Full Metal Jacket." There is a scene in which the drill instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, leads the recruits in a ritualistic exercise of learning the difference between a Marine's rifle and his "gun". This got me thinking.
There are many conceptual similarities between the rifle and the penis. Both are basically long tubes with a propelling mechanism that ejects material that is meant to reach its target to achieve success (military or sexual.) And similarly, the soldier is simply an expendable pawn in the greater battle, much like the sperm cell is procreation.
This duality of ultimate expression of maleness - to kill and to fûck - was seen most glaringly in the sad story of the nerd that killed the women in the sports club. His inability to achieve conquest with women drove him to achieve conquest in killing. And the same psychology underlies the high level of militancy in the Moslem world, in which highly frustrated males (because of the polygyny of that culture) are eager to be a soldier for jihad (especially when they think they will get those sexy 72 virgins.)
In other mammalian species, it is common for males to fight to achieve the alpha status and have access to the females. Obviously this duality is well ingrained in the psyche.
