Look at Iraq, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Bosnia, Ukraine. Do I need to name more? Because there are more. There are just a very few 3rd world countries that are not controlled, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba. The rest are controlled by either United States, United Kingdom, China, or Russia.
Easiest way to control a country is to gift it with freedom and lend it money. United States is the leader in this type of control. If they don't take money though, then they go after weapons of mass destruction.
