"The Coffee Shop Girl You Never Spoke To"

You've replayed it a hundred times. She stood three feet away, scrolling her phone. You had an opening. You composed the perfect line — after she was gone.

For all you know, she's married now. To some guy who said something. Anything.

Openers are cheap. Almost any sentence works when it's delivered within three seconds. The expensive part is the standing there, drafting and deleting, while the window quietly closes.

The "22 Rules" stripped out my hesitation. What to open with, how to keep it alive, and the one habit that costs guys more women than anything else: waiting for perfect.

OK, this hasn't happened to me personally but has happened to a good friend of mine, he needs advice on his situation and wants to know what to do.

Bascially, he was sitting in the college library one day and reasonably hot looking girl (~HB7-8) came up to him and said something along the lines of:

"Heya, my name is "____", I'm 26, and I did my bachelors at "x", my masters at "y", and my doctors at "z", I'm thinking of emigrating to the United States and I've already got my visa. I was wondering if you would like to come with me, and maybe we could settle down together?"

I joke not, and the girl looked pretty serious, even handed him her mobile phone number (which, incidentally, was real) and told him where she lived. Under any normal circumstances the reply would be "Don't trust this girl, she's playing a really sick joke on you and would like to see your reaction." But on the basis that she actually gave him a working telephone number, and what essentially sounded like a possible marriage proposal, or, failing that, a definite "yes" to "Will you go our with me?"

I mean, how would you react to that?

"She Made Her Decision Before You Finished Your Sentence"

Three seconds. That's how long it took. Your shoes. Your posture. The way you held your drink. Whether you looked at the floor or looked at her.

She already filed you away. Interesting. Boring. Safe. Bold. Before you even opened your mouth.

Everything you say after that is just her confirming what she already decided.

So stop rehearsing lines. Fix the first three seconds. Stand tall. Look up. Smile like you mean it. Walk like you belong wherever you're standing.

The words come later. The impression comes first.

The same thing happened to me. This woman asked me to go to America with her and when I said no, she kept hounding me and countering my excuses.

So here I am somewhere in America with this fairly hot girl. It's not too bad. She let's me out of the cellar every weekend and she only beats me when I disagree with her. She says we're going to get married as soon as I can walk again!

stay away as far as possible

either she is nuts or she is playing a joke on this person

"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.
