This is the trouble with viewing everything with pure evolutionary/biological views. It is very nihilistic. It reduces or even destories the meaning and value of so many things. Nihilism and Surrealism art is rooted with the scientific discoveries and sense of disillusionment of the the past 20th century.
I like KontrollerX but I honestly do not wish for that to be the first reply. I have to admit that in the evolutionary perspective, the purpose is to basically to survive and reproduce. However, in me, I disagree with the premise of all of life is just to live out the evolutionary-biological purpose.
In that view, not just romanticism and attraction to girls seems hollow, but everything does. Why care about friends? Why bother living? Why bother pursuing any dream or having any ambitions? After all, we're just an upgraded version of an ape whose programming is still just to replicate, if that we are all about, why care for anything else. Worse, the one thing to care (BTW this means women would be the primary focus and nothing else higher... or even lower, which according to my memory, very un-DJ), why care for that?
The funny thing is, Charles Darwin and even the Theory of Evolution never meant this. The mistaken concept that created from that was Social Darwinism, and you all know how that went... Now there's this new concept derived from evolution...
My sn, TheHumanist, is named that for a reason, part of humanism is the belief in the value of humans, in life. I read and study past philosphers of the past (Humanism is part of the Enlightenment) for as I found from there, there's more to life.
As is said here, "There more to Life than Women" (therefore have pursuits above them as argued here), There's more to life than just the idea we are a mass of cells that want to replicate the code that made the cells, which to my opinion, that train of thought sounds even more worthless than a mind just on women.
So going back, so the thing about romantics, love, and so on, is the article saying that evolution-biology explains that it exist for that stated purpose. I must admit that it is true and logical. However, I say there is more to humanity and life than just the evolutionary-biological existance.
We may laugh, cry, mourn, celebrate, and.... love, that all can be reduced to some biological-evolutionary thing. Do not think it cheapens the meaning of the joy shared from friends, experiences lived, and... of course... the time spent with a girl.
You know the ironic thing, the scientists and researchs (at the least one I talked with) never meant for this, they find data and make some theories. More of the time the media takes it and make many new claims on it. Actually, a little project assigned from my course I'm taking is finding a scientific article and a mainstream corresponding article and take note of the changes found.
