Smiling & eye contact with strangers

I usually don't make eye contact until a split-second before I pass the person. While this occasionally works (in that they will smile back), I often feel that I am being way too timid, and that I am exhibiting a lack of confidence by avoiding them until the last minute, and then suddenly looking at them might just seem weird.

On the other hand, I feel like staring at the person the whole time they are in view would be creepy. There must be a happy medium. How do I find it?

Why are you so concerned with eye contact? If you feel like looking at her then look at her, if you don't then don't.

I'm more the type that I walk around with my head up and smile. I'm almost the opposite of you because I think it might be best if I reel that in a little bit. I come off as too friendly which is associated with having no "edge"

You should make a conscious effort to keep your head up and to not shy away from eye contact. I was always the kind of person that avoided eye contact. Being a person that pursues eye contact instead of hiding from it tremendously increases your presence.

Just look up and look right into their eyes. Give them a slight smile or a nod of the head. At least make them look away. Do this for a few days and you will feel a boost in your confidence. All of a sudden you will notice that people actually pay more attention to you.
