It's not just the left, it's the main demand of BLM, it's on their web page. If you don't agree, you're going to be labeled.

I'd like to see some of the big, blue cities defund the police. Give them a dose of reality.
How about this? For people who want to defund the police, have them write down where they live. And if there are any emergency calls to those addresses, the police don't have to respond. That should save some money.

And in the interest of fairness, these people should be given a reduced tax rate that excludes police funding since they will not be protected by the police.

They didn't know what they wanted at first. Vague references to justice and peace. Well, who doesn't want justice and peace?

Then I saw a bunch of funny videos of protestors saying "call the police!"

Now, apparently, they don't want ANY police...

I'm enjoying the show.

Ok so no guns and no police? do they rely on witchcraft for their own protection?

This rainbow forces are a like self harming people, they are a problem to themselves and others.

Partially defunding the police and re-distributing the money to schools, daycare, mental health, creating new institutions/hospitals for the mentally ill, eliminating homelessness, sounds like a great idea. In Toronto a counselor has tabled a motion for 10% reduction of funds seeing the city is spending billions on police. Money allocation shows where the priorities of society is and as long as a society tolerates homelessness, housing and employment discrimination, mentally ill people, and pushes this under the rug with the police so its out of sight, out of mind, and devalues the lives of citizens so they are not living their fullest and most productive lives, then it's not going to be a just society.

Maybe they are onto something.

Everyone could buy his own gun or hire security and wouldn't need to rely on government for protection.

Do we really need Socialized Protection?

They want to abolish the 2nd Amendment though.

I would be leery of buying into this idea of getting rid of socialized protection, considering the group that is calling for it is a socialist organization.

This is a misconception. “Abolish the police” refers to dismantling the current police department and starting over. All are fired and have to reapply. It was already done in Camden, NJ when it was deemed their police department was too corrupt to be salvageable. It does not mean “police should not exist.”

Can you explain how this even addresses my comment?

I time-stamped for you, regardless of how the media is trying to spin this, the actual protesters are indeed calling for abolishing the police department.... just look at the girl holding the sign at 0:38 where I time-stamped....

It is clear this thread was created with a different intent than substantive discussion. Neither of those videos addresses my comment. Have fun in your echo chamber. Cheers.

It was my understanding that Minneapolis was looking to get rid of the police and replace them not with another police department, but a series of social programs. Like an army of social workers dispatched to solve problems, neighborhood groups to talk out problems, etc. Those aren't bad ideas in themselves, there are some effective programs out there, and I'm for trying more of them if they work. But they don't replace what the police do. If those programs can replace certain aspects of what cops do, which will free cops up to focus on more serious crimes, I'm okay with at least trying it out. Hopefully we don't hear about a bunch of social workers being shot.
