Religion's are primitive mythical memes dreamt up by mankind in order to weave a web of meaning where there may be none.
They fulfill a psychological human need for certainty ie eternal life after death in one form or another.
They answer the question that many humans ask of why we are here ie because gods, the goddess, bob the raingod put us here stupid.
They give you hope that you'll see your dead relative friend or lover on the otherside when you die and that physical death is not the end.
They helped to make sense of a primitive world without technological advances ie sun worship (eclipse in apocalypto meant the god's bloodlust was sated for the moment), volcanic eruptions (sacrificing people to the god's to prevent them), thunder and lightning (the gods are angered), rain (the god's are pleased especially bob the raingod for this one lol).
They allowed for mass mind control when primitive yet more naturally critical thinking oriented humans realized that the religion's were just stories and beliefs and had no real effect on nature or the people who believed them so they became the leaders of the religion and used it to control its followers into doing their bidding since the gods clearly favored them.
So yeah my take is religion and god belief is complete b.s but it makes sense the belief in god, gods, godesses and religion came about in primitive times and carried over today as an unfortunate side effect of an earlier time.
And since human beings can never know all the knowledge in the universe the most intelligent stance to take towards religion is an agnostic atheism where you are open to the idea of some form of god or unknown religion being true but until you are exposed to a god or religion you cannot disprove you can continue to disbelieve.
I mean for all we know in some corner of the universe there may be a godly pink unicorn who created all of us and the universe but we don't know that for sure so we have to keep our minds open incase one day that unicorn comes a calling and proves itself as being real lol.
