Doublethink is the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct. The term was coined in Orwell's novel 1984.
The crux of PUA is the notion that women want a 'high-value' guy (e.g. tall, handsome, wealthy, etc.). High-value guys exhibit specific personality traits (e.g. they don't exhibit needy behavior). The theory is that if you, as a low-value guy, can consciously force yourself to exhibit these same personality traits, you can 'trick' the woman into thinking you are high-value.
But the only way to consciously force yourself to exhibit these personality traits is to *actually* believe you are a high-value guy, even though you very well know you are not one. Anything less than an actual belief will result in you stumbling and returning to the behavior exhibited by low-value guys.
Essentially, you need to KNOW you are The Great Catch (to use a Pook term) even though at the very same time you KNOW you are short, ugly, jobless, etc., and that The Great Catch is not any of these things. But you cannot consciously recognize this contradiction in the heat of the moment, because then the whole facade collapses.
