While everyone has different opinions on working out, the consensus seems to be that you should have protein asap after a workout (especially lifting).

Do you make your own or buy them? How many grams would you recommend? Any specific brands better than others?

Get your protein from real food. I've worked out for 20 plus years tried all the gimmicky supplements. I got the best gains when I got all my nutrients from real food. I find that it's not completely necessary to eat immediately as long as you hit your daily protein/caloric requirements
