I am curious where the general political compass of the board. I am not asking who you support for president or specific policies, but just where everyone generally lines up on the scale. I know I didn't include every possible option, but I feel like I see 4 major groups generally in politics. By creating a poll, nobody is obligated to disclose their position.

Being in California my whole life, I have always been a liberal and felt Fox News and Republicans were a little bit crazy. That is the picture painted here. It was around the time I found SS that I began to question my thinking. I realized I prefer minimal government., and that everyone should be responsible for their own actions. I really didn't know any different as all of my family and friends were at least moderate liberal, if not very liberal...

Now, I have realized, I am likely a moderate conservative, maybe this was always the case. For example,
-I think abortion and recreational drugs are not good things, but I don't believe they should be legislated
-I believe welfare is an absolute mess and enables more problems than it does fix them
-I also don't think we should be handing out needles to people on skid row, "tough love" is the better approach

I don't wish to discuss presidents, etc. I am more curious if the discovery of SS has affected people similarly. I feel like the more I learned, the less I became heavily slanted towards the progressive left or the conservative right. It made me much more balanced (at least I would like to think so). My initial hypothesis is that most here would be more moderate as well.

But I am more curious if anyone else has experienced this change?

I can't answer your poll because I don't really identify with any of them. I also don't vote, so I don't have a party I favor or any policy that I'm invested in, other than what's best for me and my family. Whatever parts of government help me I use, and the parts that don't I do my best to avoid. I don't think there's any -ism out there for me.

That's good. I'm not one for groups either, but it sounds like you're in the middle. The -ism seems to fall more on the ends of the spectrum.

Thanks for sharing

It's hard to say because I'm far to the right when it comes to firearms (I'm from Missouri very pro gun) anti illegal immigration, BUT I'm also anti war in the middle east and some of my ideas align with national socialism such as strong military, strong nationalism, but I also believe everyone should have access to healthcare, etc. I mention national socialism because Germany back then put a big emphasis on health, infrastructure, military and national pride. So there really isn't a poll option.

Count me as another that cannot provide a specific answer.
In the past, I was a "depends on the issue"person but with left leanings.
This year, I'm 95% sure that I'm voting for Trump.

I will be to but I don't like his rabid anti Iran stance and Middle East BS just like him and the other neocons have.

I'm a Classical Liberal that votes conservative..... Because modern conservatism aligns more with classical liberalism....

....modern day liberalism is actually leftism which is an effeminate and fascist ideology that wants to censor free speech and abolish the 2nd A....

I voted for moderate conservative but Im mostly a libertarian.

Im fine with immigration as long as its planned and controlled at the benefit of the hosting country first and the newcomers only later.

I'm fine with legalization of light drugs and prostitution while I have zero tolerance for demaning welfare money with no real necessity.

Live and let live, live and let die.

I consider myself a moderate conservative, even though most others would call me a righty. I’m really just anti-bull**** when it comes down to it:

- Pro 2A because police don’t act fast enough (plus, I don’t trust the government). If they’re wanting to take away our guns, it means they’re wanting to do something we would want to shoot them for.

- Dislik Big Government. I don’t think that really needs expanding on.

- Like lower taxes.

- Like less taxes.

- Like the prioritizing of the state of our Union over populist propaganda that doesn’t mean anything.

- Dislike communism and socialism, as it never works. Karl Marx never considered the fact that humans were lazy, and that fair ≠ equal.

- I prefer belief in God over moral nihilism and anti-theist atheism. One nation, under God.

- I strongly dislike doublespeak even though I’m somewhat fluent in it myself. Logical fallacies along with rational distortions can be used to justify anything.

- I am a man, and I do not appreciate the demonization of my masculinity when it is what made people treat me better in the first place.

- For Westerners, the Republic is greater than the Empire.

I'm a left-libertarian sympathizer, which puts me outside the Overton Window of conventional political discussion, but I checked the vote for "progressive" in your poll since it's the nearest alternative. I'm only a "sympathizer" because I'm too philosophically pessimistic and pragmatic to bother being more than that.

I really don't fit neatly into any box. I'm just as much bothered by SJW bullsh!t and religious social conservative bullsh!t. Neither Republicans or Democrats follow basic economic principles... the fiscal and monetary policies of both parties are cr@p. We haven't had a President since Richard Nixon that has had a legitimate national security defense strategy which guides policy and acquisition. Both parties are ignoring the fact that social security and medicare are headed for insolvency, since both are built on a pyramid scheme that is built on the false premise of exponential population growth, which we have not seen since the boomer generation... who is NOW about to take from those programs.

Our USSC nominations are just disgusting stupidity and the only thing that anyone cares about is positions on abortion... which to be honest I do not give a fvck about. I'm fine with abortion: I would also be okay if it was illegal... I really don't care. I know there are those that really do care about this, and I am not knocking their position, but we don't nominate judges anymore based on if they will be fair, but what the may or may not do about abortion. To me this is silly. I do not believe the founding fathers envisioned the courts being so important. Congress has surrendered their obligation to make laws and amend the Constitution to mirror modernity. We fought a revolution to get ride of the King... and we have replaced this today with rule by fiat by 9 judges, who like the King serve life appointments.

On gun ownership.... well I think this is a Constitutional right that can not be taken away without amendment. However, the pro-gun lobby is batsh!t crazy, that fights every prudent measure.

Democrats want to tax and spend: Republicans borrow and spend. Neither 'plan' is sustainable, and right now we are carrying a debt level as a percentage of our GDP that we had during WWII.... In addition, private debt is at an all time high. We are trying to maintain our economic growth by borrowing from the future... We either need to adopt a realistic expectation of economic growth or increase our population by increase immigration, since our birth rate is so low, which Republicans hate... and Democrats just want this to be completely uncontrolled.

Anyway... I have no idea who I will support. If Sanders wins the nomination, I'll vote for Trump... only because he is the lesser of two evils. If Biden wins... well I really don't know... I have 8 months to think about it. On the surface, I don't dislike what Trump SAYS he wants to do, but the man has proven to be incompetent, and is unable to expand his support beyond his base. I had serious doubts that a reality TV star could be effective, and his performance has only re-enforced my opinion. He has the attention span of a gnat with behavior and bumbling has given control of the House to the Democrats. To be fair, I do not think HRC would have been any better, and I'm not sure if Biden would be any better.

I will say this, our biggest threats to National Security is our mounting debt, and it doesn't look like Trump gives a fvck about this... going so far as to say he 'loves debt'... which is crazy talk. The other threat is the fact that our nation has NEVER been this divided since the Vietnam War the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. I do not believe Biden or Trump can fix this.

Interesting perspective on the judges. It is quite odd a singular issue, being abortion, seems to drive the USSC nominations. In reality, that is a very small percentage of issues they deal with.

Like you, I also don't like the divide, but both sides just keep throwing more fuel on the fire. I really just wish one side would say, okay this is stupid. What the hell are we doing?

I also agree on the debt issue as personal debt rises to insane levels. People are spending like crazy.

.....people have been predicting the death of the Republican party since the 1960's.....

.....it was believed that the "peace, love, unity" hippie generation would end conservatism.....

.....cope......

.....Those same "peace, love, unity" hippies grew up to be hardcore conservatives that voted for Reagan and Bush Senior in the 80s and G.W. Bush in the early 2000s.....

.....sorry but conservatism aint going anywhere.... As people mature they eventually let go of the foolish pie-in-the-sky idealism that permeates throughout leftist culture.....

...we're seeing that shift in the Democratic party right now.... Those moderate dems that support Biden will most likely jump ship to the Republican party by next election cycle....

Well, it usually happens the other way around, but it can happen backwards, too. Did you experience a TBI? That usually explains an adult loss of IQ.
I have taken a few punches to the ole noggin. But that was before Obamacare, so I didn't have health insurance and couldn't go to the doctor.

You're welcome! Thanks to Obamacare, I now pay $3k/mo for the same comprehensive family insurance policy that cost me $400/mo pre-Obamacare...all so I can pay to cover your pre-existing brain damaged. Can you say, "thank you"?

Yes, thank you, Obama! I love my free healthcare!

And if you are tired of your insurance company sticking it to you, then vote for the only candidate who wants to stick it to them.

The ACA was a horrible idea from the beginning, but let's not forget that this plan, in it's general form was developed by the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, and during the Clinton Administration the idea was supported by Speaker Gingrich.

Republicans tried 40 times to repeal Obamacare, only to have it vetoed by President Obama. Then when they had control of both houses of Congress, and the Presidency under Trump... they only tried once and they totally fvcked that up too. Since the President has the emotional self control of a teen age girl, he couldn't help but continue to insult Republicans like John McCain, he needed to repeal it. They had two years to fix this, and all they did was eliminate the means to pay for it, and hope the courts over-turn it... which they did not, so all we are doing is adding more debt.

History is going to look back on the Trump Presidency as an epic lost opportunity for the conservative movement. Republicans say the right things, but they can't find their @sses with both hands.
