i'm starting to think that "what's up" is a bad opener. when i see girls i know it generally gets no response other than a smile. like, wtf, i asked you a question. i already know you guys are gonna say that 'hi' is the best opener but my first instinct is to say what's up when i see a girl i know. is this bad? im starting to feel like its ineffective. i need to make saying, 'hi' a habit. this is no joke, lol.

What's up is essentially the same as hi. It's just your style whereas I say hey. I also agree with Espi. You shouldn't really plan what you're going to say or do. If what's up is natural for you, then go for it, but try not to set up your openers.

'Hi.' Usually works for me. I too don't find canned openers all that useful.

Depends on the situation.
I usually come up with something depending on the place.
Saying a simple hi or hey isn't bad but the thing is what you're saying afterwards. That's where things matter.
