Researchers looked at nearly 200,000 heterosexual users and found that while men's sexual desirability peaks at age 50, women hit their prime at 18. Another study undertaken by dating website OkCupid found that "the median 30-year-old man spends as much time messaging teenage girls as he does women his own age".

But why does this supposed fixation that older men appear to have on young women bother me so much? Is it because, as a 40-something woman, it reminds me that in the world of dating, women of my vintage have depreciated in value? That the idea suggests physical appearance still matters more for women than men and we are thought to diminish in attractiveness more precipitously? Is it because research like this confirms what I’ve long suspected: some men (hashtag not all men) find girls more attractive than grown women – women with possibly more opinions and agency?

What ultimately bothers me is a man who believes that a woman his own age is too old to love. The French novelist Yann Moix intoned last year: "The body of a 25-year-old woman is extraordinary. The body of a woman of 50 is not extraordinary at all."

Well, I do pretty much exclusively 40 and above, the women I choose as mates have sporty, youthful physiques. The biggest issue here is that women that are in my age group 50+ are threatened by the idea that I could date much younger women if I chose to. Instead of making themselves more attractive, going to the gym, getting a nice haircut, wearing their hair long and generally acting sexy they choose to just moan and complain like many men do here. It’s unattractive and why should I bother?

It's just Mother Nature's cruel joke on all of us. A woman from teen to early 20s will have all the sexual advantages in the world but the time is fleeting. For men it's a slow steady development and later peak.

Notice these young women are never taken to task for dating much older men with lots of money and charm. There is very little self awareness when women consider these things.

I do lately find myself lamenting how it all works though. If nature weren't so harsh we'd lust after people of all types. But reproduction is a powerful force.

Who is the most desirable to engage in this drive? 18-25 year olds. Younger, hotter, tighter and not combative. My mom who is 70yo always said a woman needs to bring some skills to the table other than her looks if she expects to grow old with some man. She needs to know how to cook, clean, raise kids, and support her husband.

The older I get the stronger the desire for a woman 10+ years younger than my own age becomes. I'd rather go without than be with a woman my own age or older.

80 years ago it wasn't like this. You could be 38 and marry a 20 year old and it's okay. Or a 16 year old marrying a bit older guy.

Frankly, I think the "creepiness" thing is completely overblown. I disagree that "in general" it is frowned upon. I think it is predominantly a view that is pushed by older women to shame men who are their same age or older who go for women who are younger than them. I think you get a contingent of weak, beta men who white knight and agree with them to try to impress these women. But generally speaking, I think you would be very hardpressed to find any man who seriously thinks this is "creepy."
