There's this girl at work but I only ever see her in passing - I'm sat at my desk, she's walking thru the room. We've exchanged smiles a few times. One time I was delivering some work and she was walking the other way, I smiled and said "hi" and I'd started to recognise her, and she responded too and then looked down.

Only the next day I was walking the corridor and she held a door open as people do here. Instead of smiling ro saying hi, she blatantly and deliberately totally avoided eye contact, looking kind of shy.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

Talk to her. What have you got to lose? From the sounds of it, you guys don't interact much, aren't friends or anything, as long as she's not your boss (or his daughter) you have nothing to lose and plenty to gain.

Could just be shy. You might get many negative signals from a shy girl. I would go by explicit rejections rather than trying to determine what her body movements mean.
