Last night I met someone who will probably change my life. We talked for a little while; the conversation made me excited. I was amazed at how incredible another person could be and how powerful ideas are a sweeter symphony than those three words. After exchanging numbers, I got a little sample of things to come. I couldn’t help myself so I returned the favor, and suddenly all the women around me wanted my nuts. That itself was incredibly validating.
I’m telling you guys, this one is not all about the package; it’s about much bigger things.
As I drove home I was ecstatic. I rarely feel that good. I’m not sure I ever felt that good in my entire life – my whole life was about to change. I couldn’t help myself, I had to see it again, touch it again, and so I did. I held what had been given to me in my hands: a plastic container made out of non-genetically modified corn that is 100% biodegradable and can withstand the “high” setting on a microwave. This is going to change the world.
Time to back up a little….
I manage the day-to-day happenings of an organic peanut butter and nut mix company. Our products are the healthiest on the market, all designed by a certified nutritionist/personal trainer to be high in protein, low-carb, and without added sugar. My major was Entrepreneurship in college, and when I started with this company my Entrepreneurship professor asked me to be the keynote speaker at this year’s business plan competition banquet. The winning undergraduate business is the one I mentioned above – and it’s a real business, not just a project. No one else has been able to create a biodegradable plastic that can withstand higher temperatures – and theirs costs less to make. We package our products in plastic, not glass, and have been looking at more ecologically friendly containers as we grow and can afford to place larger orders (re: there’s a minimum order for the recyclable containers, believe it or not). What they do excited me, and what I do excited them.
To put it simply: doing something good with your life is more powerful, intoxicating, and exciting than anything else.
It hit me like it did in college: there are bigger things than women. Life is so much bigger than pursuing women. Feeling lonely is a state of mind, not a place we find ourselves in. If I had to give up women to pursue my dreams I would. I actually did for part of college, I was so focused on what I was doing that finding one was one of the last things I wanted to do. If you have never met with this reality, that finding a woman is not a big deal and definitely not the focal point of your life, you still have a long way to go.
I missed this feeling. I’m so glad I found my way back.
