"The Coffee Shop Girl You Never Spoke To"

You've replayed it a hundred times. She stood three feet away, scrolling her phone. You had an opening. You composed the perfect line — after she was gone.

For all you know, she's married now. To some guy who said something. Anything.

Openers are cheap. Almost any sentence works when it's delivered within three seconds. The expensive part is the standing there, drafting and deleting, while the window quietly closes.

The "22 Rules" stripped out my hesitation. What to open with, how to keep it alive, and the one habit that costs guys more women than anything else: waiting for perfect.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes

Just watched Part 1 last night on HBO/Max. Part 2 airs on July 25th.

I highly recommend, so inspiring and uplifting

"Uptown Girl" about Christie Brinkley, great song and video!

"She'll see I'm not so tough
Just because
I'm in love with an uptown girl
You know I've seen her in her uptown world
She's getting tired of her high class toys
And all her presents from her uptown boys
She's got a choice"

"How I Made Sure No Woman Ever Friend-Zoned Me Again"

She calls you when her car breaks down. When she needs help moving. When some guy she's actually dating treats her badly.

You're the listener. The reliable one. The guy who would treat her so much better, if she'd just open her eyes.

She won't. You trained her to see you as the low-effort option — the friend who requires zero risk and zero investment. Every favor dug the hole deeper.

The "22 Rules" break the pattern. You'll stop auditioning for a role she already cast and become the man she chases instead. It starts with Rule 1.

I watched the Uptown Girl video. I had never seen it before. I didn't realize that Billy Joel is short. I never have thought much about Billy Joel or his height.

Billy Joel is only 5'5". Christie Brinkley is 5'9"-5'10". If she ever wore heels out in public with him, she would have towered over him.

I could date someone who is 5'9"-5'10" since I am 5'10" myself. It would be more awkward if that woman wore heels or platform shoes out in public with me. She would be taller in the public eye though in reality she would not be taller than I am.

It’s all about how you handle yourself. I’ve dated a 6ft blonde, 6 inches taller than me.

BIG presence and personality though!

He's dated Elle Macpherson
and was married to Christie and Katie Lee another model turned author and chef.

"She Made Her Decision Before You Finished Your Sentence"

Three seconds. That's how long it took. Your shoes. Your posture. The way you held your drink. Whether you looked at the floor or looked at her.

She already filed you away. Interesting. Boring. Safe. Bold. Before you even opened your mouth.

Everything you say after that is just her confirming what she already decided.

So stop rehearsing lines. Fix the first three seconds. Stand tall. Look up. Smile like you mean it. Walk like you belong wherever you're standing.

The words come later. The impression comes first.

I was mistaken Katie Lee was not a model, so you may be right!

Here's Katie describing how she met him.

I think she may have viewed him as someone who could open doors for her, she landed the hosting gig on Bravo's Top Chef Season One shortly after they were married.

Agree. I think she liked Billy Joel's money too.

Katie Lee is only 4 years older than Alexa Ray Joel, his daughter with Christie Brinkley.

she landed the hosting gig on Bravo's Top Chef Season One shortly after they were married.
The Billy Joel connection was helpful with that.

Here's Katie describing how she met him.
Katie Lee was born in 1981. She met Billy Joel in 2002, as a 21 year old. Billy Joel was already 53 by then. In 2002, Billy Joel's music hadn't been popular in a long time. Katie Lee had her formative years in the 1990s listening to music that wasn't Billy Joel.

Katie spent most of her 20s in a relationship with a man in his 50s. They separated when she was 27 and only a few months away from turning 28. She did it for the money, lifestyle, and opportunities.

After Billy Joel, she seemed to date men near her own age, eventually marrying one also born in 1981.

I think Katie is fortunate that she didn't have kids with Billy Joel. When they separated, she was 27 and likely starting to think seriously about having kids. She didn't end up having a child until age 38. That's a bit late in life for having a first child.

Appreciate the idea… I tried watching part one last night but couldn’t make it 45 minutes and passed out cold. I was on the beach all day

I love Allentown
Never been there but this particular song brings such a strong message!

Well we’re waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved

So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coke
Chromium Steel

And we’re waiting here in Allentown
But they’ve taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away

Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
But something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our face...

Billy Joel was a hard-core alcoholic who used to disappear for long stretches while married to Christie, he once got up from the table during Thanksgiving and didn't return for days going on drunken binges and passing out.

Christie encouraged rehab and he finally went but relapsed and it was after yet another drunken binge and disappearance that she asked for a divorce.

He's sober now....

You COULD probably date lots of different types of women, hoss: Your thought process though:

Katie Lee was born in 1981. She met Billy Joel in 2002, as a 21 year old. Billy Joel was already 53 by then. In 2002, Billy Joel's music hadn't been popular in a long time. (That's an immense amount of exceptionally loopy analysis, around a very inane topic. You indulge in such activity quite often)is the intellectual and verbal equivalent of Adam Pearson's unconventional countenance:

Less of a panty peeler to most women than the thought being sent back to The 1800s and tossed into Commanche country, minus an M-16 + an endless supply of ammunition, is to most men

"She Laughed All Night. Then She Ghosted You. Here's Why."

Dinner ran three hours. She laughed at everything. You walked her to her car thinking this one's locked in.

Then: nothing. Two texts. No reply. What happened?

You did what most men do on a great date. You filled every silence, answered every question, and left her with nothing to wonder about. No mystery. Nothing to sit with when she got home.

Rule 3 of the "22 Rules" changes the ending: tell her a little, hold back the rest, and let her imagination do the chasing. The ghosting stops too.

the song sweetheart
Oops my bad, I thought after I responded you might have meant that!

Anyway after you said you loved it, I looked it up online and it does look like an interesting city. A lot of history!

But agree, great song.

He has had issues with drinking alcohol for a while.

It's worth noting that 2 of Christie Brinkley's husbands had addiction issues.

Billy Joel has been to rehab for alcohol addiction multiple times, including 2 times after his marriage to Christie Brinkley ended. His first rehab stint was in 1992 while still married to Brinkley. He went again in 2002. He also went in 2005 during the early days of his marriage to Katie Lee.

Shoot it's asking me to create an account to read the second article (in its entirety).

I have so many different online accounts just to read what appears to be one interesting article!

I knew about Christie, I read an excerpt from her new book last night before posting.

From her book:

He picked up a chaise lounge and threw it right through the doors of the patio, shattering the glass into a million pieces.

If that story is true about Billy Joel, he looks pretty bad with that.

That seems like grounds for immediate divorce in a marriage, but too many women would not file for divorce immediately after an incident like that.
