Good summation. There are some women there who are bisexual, some who are doing it so their man won't leave 'em, and the rest are attention wh0res.

Do swingers in general stay in the scene for a short time or for many years?
The ones I saw who'd done it for years were the ugliest of 'em all. Most attractive women won't touch the scene with a 10-foot pole, and most attractive guys f*ck a few old cougars and leave. Ask yourself, what does a young, attractive woman gain by f*cking random old married guys at a party? Nothing. This unfortunately means that the average attractiveness of the swinger community is rather substandard. The first party I went to where I f*cked the 8 was an anomaly, unfortunately. People at the party were commenting on how attractive the couples there were. But that has not panned out ever again.
Are there "alpha couples" who socialize with each other and arrange events for the rest?
Yes. They've usually been in the scene for years and have all f*cked each other.

Yes. It doesn't cause "problems" unless you're not as attractive. Couples pair up based purely on hotness. If you're interested in trying it out, get a woman who is at least as physically attractive as yourself. Otherwise you will be severely limited. The hotter person in a couple ends up "taking one for the team" because the couple you can attract is only as attractive as the ugliest person in your couple.
Is there a system between the pairings to avoid that kind of problem?
See above. It all tends to sort itself out. I banged one chick who was an 8, had a 7 go down on me, and since then have had nothing but super-slut cougs. These cougs surround themselves with desperate dudes who have no game. Avoid "unicorns" at all costs. These are women who come to swing parties alone. They are the most massive attention wh*res I've ever seen, and every single one I've met has taken medications to avoid being bonkers. These chicks have notch-counts in the hundreds if not thousands but expect to be treated like princesses. And many desperate single men in the swing scene will treat them as such.
Whatever you do, don't go as a single male. They are pathetic and count themselves lucky if they get any action whatsoever, even if they're the 6th guy to f*ck a 50 year old unicorn that night. They are looked down upon in the scene and treated like dirt. Most parties won't even let them in, and the ones that do make them serve drinks and park cars to be allowed to enter. Always go with a woman, always.
Can't say I'm surprised though. Good-looking women can have sex with as many men as they want without going to swingers' parties.
