How do you guys get away from your computer?

The last week has really made me realize that I seriously need to quit my computer! It's at the point now where surfing the net I become depressed. I start to think about how im going no where with my life and I blame it on my computer.

A year and a half ago I had a problem with getting off my computer. But then I started to follow a mass gain program to combat my skinnyness. My confidence had shot up but I still wanted to be a better man. So I found this site and started to read up. Life was good and I was at my peak. Had my first serious girlfriend at the age of 18.Than I got terribly sick and lost a bit of wieght. During this time I coudn't work out and I quit my job. So I spent alot of time surfing the net and palying PC games. Now Im back at it. Im not sick anymore but I cant get away from my computer. BUT I WANT TO! Right now it's 2:35am and I should be going to sleep. But im telling myself I will a 3am, and than it'll be 3:30, and than 4am until it's 5:30.

Here's a ist of my problems:

I procrastinate on everything because I want to be on my computer

I look at countless pornography

I stay up way to late! Most times till 5am, even when I have to work that morning!

I now become depressed because I hardly go outside or socialize anymore and have become unfit and skinny again.

Im always late for work cause im on my computer

I've stopped going to the gym and eating properly (lost 15lbs in 3 months)

Self asteem has plummeted

G/F broke up

and I cant unplug my internet because my other borthers use this computer aswell.

The only thing that makes me want to get away from my computer is my recent love for paintball. This may be the only thing that can help me. Problem is it's hard to get my friends together and go because were all at school or working. So we usually do it once a week. But the rest of my week is spent at work and on my computer.

My new addiction to paintball has me encouraged to go back into the gym and workout so im fit to play. Im also socializing when im at paintball fields. Im happy when im paintballing (unlike being upset and miserable when im on my computer). Problem is im procrastinating on the whole gym thing.

So please! Paintball wont last forever for me. So I need to think of other ways to get myslef away from my computer!

Your existence was likely boring, pointless, and pathetic prior to your encounter with the computer. I suggest you get a grip on your priorities. Do you have dreams? Do you want a legacy? Devise a plan to make life happen.

Just break it. Then you wont have to be stressed about wanting to go on it, because you wont have one!

Just keep trying to get away. If you must, break the damn thing.... by 'accident' of course, Just dont give up.

Discipline yourself.

Here's a tip. Delete everything you can in the " c:\ " and "c:\windows" folder. go through all the files and delete as many as windows will let you. I can guarantee it will not work anymore.

Or, for a more permanent solution take the computer outside and also "accidentally" drop it from somewhere really high. I guarantee you that its alot of fun and you will be releived when you know that you dont have to deal with it anymore.

You could try setting aside time to be on the computer and ONLY go on at those times. Kind of like how some people control jerking off by setting up dates with themselves and only doing it then.

That way you can set it up so that you are on the computer 4 hours a day and that's it.

There is also parental control software available that will lock down your computer when a certain time limit has passed or the computer was scheduled to not be accessible. You could ask one of your brothers to help you by setting the password so you can't cheat yourself.

They'll still be able to access it cause they will have the password, but you won't be able to more than whatever number of hours you program the software to allow you.

DISMANTLE YOUR COMPUTER

I mean, pull all the cables out, and pack the keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor all into boxes. Clear out all the wires. Maybe even a good chance to vaccuum in the death-hole that's the ground behind your desk. Wipe off your table, and go do something.

Then unscrew your desktop and remove the cards and the harddisks. Store these in static bags. Then put all the crap in the most hard to reach place that you can. It'll be too much of a hassle to set everything up. If you need to write stuff down, buy a legal pad and some pens. Get a few postits, but for god's sake, don't let a computer rule your life.

whether a true man, a father, or a DJ

You must accept self-discipline, dish it out, and perform it at all times necessary.

Get off this site if your not willing to accept the fact...

Seriously, just take responsibility for your life. You talk as if some evil invisible force is controlling your actions, its not! The day you wake up and take responsibility will be when your life permnanetly changes in a good way.

Hey,

This kinda sounds like me a year or so ago. I've improved heaps but I have 1 problem; my posture.

I have a slight neck hunch which I think was caused by using the computer too much a year ago, with my neck hunching towards the screen.

What I want to know is if there is any way to fix it. What exercises / techniques can I use to fix this problem? I know its a bit turnoff for girls, thats why I want to fix it before year 12 starts in mid Feb.

Please any advice will be great :)

IHatePants,

Did you by chance, grow up in a religious environment?
What I'm sensing isn't that you have a "self-control problem". You ahve a guilt problem and you also are pretty bored right now, but don't know what to do.

The cycle is : bored -> computer --> guilt --> jump on yourself -> deprive yourself -> bored -> computer -> etc.

Think of one meaningful pursuit, as determined by your own values, and do that for a while. When you do it, determine how you feel about it. For example, if for you, a meaningful pursuit was "cleaning your room", were you bored, happy, frustrated? What did you get from it.

See, the real problem is that you have an idea of what you think "meaningful pursuits" are, but you might not be getting from them what you'd like. That's the real issue to be explored. So I'd like for you to try out what I said, and let us know how it goes for you.

you have a poor habit, but you can always adjust yourself. you definetly need something to do other than computer, get a job or go outside with your friends and hang out often.

I used to have somewhat of the same problem. It wasnt that i spent too much time surfing i just felt like i did.

So
1) deleted IM messaging software. If i want to talk to someone i can call them and vise versa.

2) Deleted all the games on my computer

3) gave my buddy admin account on my computer, had him block all sites not related to my work.

Now all of a sudden your computer isn't useful for anything but work and you'd be suprised how fast you stop relying on it for things.

Find some things you like just as much or even more than the computer.

Self-control by itself won't do anything if you can't fill the void.
