I would say the ego changes depending on the context. In general I would work with maslov's pyramide of needs. The ego becomes more nuanced multi perspective transparent fluctuationg. So it's basically almost an illusion.

In general the ego is the operating system of our meat machine. It depends on it's programming and the externel imput.

I would say "self actualization"

It's the top level in maslov's pyramid. Your guy is quite on the lower level. That's ok one has to work himself up.

On the higher level ego becomes more and more an illusion just a story.

Every living human has one.

Ego is ur life narrative, a story that you see urself in.

Unless I'm mistaken, the majority of people with it can live unassisted, the only thing that tends to suffer is their relationships. Of course cases where they had severe brain trauma is a different story. I don't know any studies that examine the quality of life in people with retrograde amnesia.

Interesting topic!

So as we are imaginative beings, we can imagine and create any kind of idea... also our ego or how we see each others.

But, in some cases, isn't that a way to hide our fear from death? When we create such ideas like "I'm the best" or chase some ideals... what those it matters in the end?

Death will come, and it will be all lost.

What I think that may be the challenge is, we can create a ego that contribute to our species survival... Like leaving some legacy. But we can also create a fake reality to avoid pain and avoid our fear of death.

It's just an idea, not saying this is right. But, something interesting to think and discuss.

Yes this is the biggest project of mankind. That is why Socialism will never lose it's appeal.

But in some ways, human kind are on a stage that chasing papers is more important than other stuffs.

Maybe this will be necessary for us to understand what really matters in the future.
