According to the UK tabloid The Sun, sales of lingerie have skyrocketed (warning, link is possibly not safe for work) since the Euro 2012 tournament began on June 8, apparently an attempt by wives and girlfriends to compete with football for their significant others’ affections. “My partner has been glued to the football every night so I bought a nice set of bra and knickers to get his attention,” says one office worker. “It seems to have paid off, although obviously it’s more difficult to distract him when England are playing.”

during the tournament, my mate and I would go to a big popular bar in town, big screens, great atmosphere for when the England games were on.
its quite a popular place on weekends anyway.
it was interesting to watch the dynamic change, usual night out, lots of AW's strutting and preening....change that to the game nights, dozens and dozens of guys, focused on the screen and the game, the screetching and noise from the women went up to weapons grade irritating! can you imagine? lots of loud, inebriated guys and these women had to raise the noise level to let everyone know they were there? it was quite funny really.

There was a somewhat similar dynamic going on when I went to Super Bowl party hosted by a work colleague and his wife. His wife's friends were definitely not anything I really cared to do (although I guess if push came to shove, I would not have kicked her out of bed), and they were always subtly trying to get the men's attention during commercials.
