I think it's more about the confidence. He was a guy with ideals, who went after what he wanted and you can see in his interviews that he had his own style, was confident and pretty much was the kind of guy that was giving zero ****s to anyone's opinion. It's undeniable that he wasn't a really handsome guy, and in his late years he was even chubby, but it's about the aura, I guess.

Same goes for Serge Gainsbourg. Most degenerate, weird awful looking guy I have ever seen. It turns out that he had this energy of "I don't care", which gives him a different aura mixing up with his ugliness. Women at his time would probably be scratching their heads trying to figure out why the guy was so confident and successful with women.
