Well I'm still teetering between Japan and Korea. I really would prefer to live in japan, but I'm not hopeful at all about getting a placement in Tokyo. What are other cities that would be fun and worth living in, in Japan? I know Osaka is considered great too. If I got a placement in Osaka I'd take it in a heartbeat. What other cities?

Well you could try... I'm gonna rank them to my preference.

1. Yokohama (Right next to Tokyo the feeling and atmosphere is the same. It's just much cheaper. Very hot for teenagers and has new clubs and stuff.)

2. Saitama (Another Tokyo like city but inexpensive compared to living in Tokyo. It's really urban and fun.)

3. Kyoto / Nara (Lots of old Shinto and Buddhist temples, a huge tourist location.)

4. Osaka (Another cool city, it's like the Tokyo for lower Japan.)

5. Sapporo (One of the Japanese beer band is named after this location. It's in Hokaidou and it gets pretty cold.)

cool thanks, that's helpful. I'm interested more in the big-city type atmosphere, with lots to do and good nightlife and whatnot. I think places like Tokyo/Osaka/Yokohama are more what I'm interested in than places like Kyoto/Nara. Do you know what Nagoya is like?

Well Nagoya is in Aichi-ken, personally I think it's like any mid-sized Japanese city. It has some old culture like Nagoya castle. If are interested in Tokyo and Yokohama I wouldn't really recommend Nagoya. Almost every Japanese city is the same once you get out of Tokyo. Only a hand full is different, IMO the most America or Gaijin friendly places are in Tokyo, Yokohama and Saitama.

Bumping again. :) Just out of curiosity, what is it about Saitama that makes you mention it out of all other cities in Japan? I ask because you rank it up there with Tokyo and Yokohama.

-edit- I was looking at a list of cities by population that screwed me up, I thought saitama city was much lower than it is. Still, I'm interested.

Well just like Yokohama it's like an extension to Tokyo. It's very urban but it's much cheaper to live there. Some parts are that are near the river are suburban. It really has a laid back feel to it. It only takes about 10 min to get into Tokyo. If I was a broke college student and couldn't live in Tokyo, I would pick Saitama or Yokohama since it's just like living in Tokyo. Saitama has all these new construction projects too, it's gonna be one of the hot cities soon. Saitama city is new, they started construction in 2004. The neighborhood are NICE, it's like a really cool neighborhood in Minnesota. New saitama city is the sh*t, it's very Americanized. You should def check it out. :)

Hmm thats interesting. I don't know how much of an "americanized" city I'd want to live in, though, it depends on how americanized. I wouldn't want to feel totally alien, but on the other hand I'd be going over there to live in and experience a different culture. Being only 10 minutes from tokyo is a plus, though.

Also, are there any picture galleries of saitama city on the net anywhere? I'm having a hard time finding pics of Saitama.

Yea sorry that's the best I could do, it's much better looking in real life. I would def visit first and see what Tokyo, Yokohama and Saitama is like before deciding where to live. I personally would recommend Tokyo first and Yokohama second. It's really like New York but still have cultural aspects if you travel out of the city.

Thanks dude. Yeah I'd definitely have Tokyo as my first choice, it's just that it's supposedly nearly impossible to get a teaching job in Tokyo with any of the big english schools. Plus if it's cheaper to live in Yokohama/Saitama, having more money is always nice.

Are you a car enthusiast? You are in for some huge fun! They tolerate zero drunk driving, but other than that it's like driving in Germany. It's awesome, paved streets and nice cars. Government set it so every car has to get a minimum of 30 miles per gallon. The underground and night driving is the best part IMO. Also going to clubs and strip clubs are cheap compared to the U.S. I would still advice getting sh*t faced before going to clubs since you can buy handles for 10-20 bucks at any supermarket. You can be drunk or high in public and as long as you aren't harming yourself or other people the cops will leave you alone.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

You can get high in public without getting hassled? I've heard the opposite- that they're extremely anal about drugs there, including weed.

Where did you hear that? You are allowed to grow marijuana if you get a permit. I highly doubt 90% of the public even knows what weed smells like. They got head shops (Freak Brothers Roppongi) on main streets... granted not a lot of people smoke weed there, but drug use is pretty huge in Japan. Especially Tokyo, ecstasy, coke and speed are pretty big because of the Yakuza and rave/ clubs.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.
