In the movie, the woman (CATHERINE KEENER) who he (Jason Patric) is talking to is this scene has been an absolute ***** to one of his friends (Ben Stiller).

Jason Patric then gives her a pretty good beatdown when she denies his advances. If you watch it within the context of the film, this was well deserved.

So, the way he told her off - is this Alpha or Beta?

Without knowing anything about what she did before to him/his friend(s), he seems neither alpha or beta, but a psycho.

Why would he ask her out in the first place?

If she was a royal b1tch to one of his friends, then he should withdraw his attention from her. i.e. by NOT asking her out. Simple as that. Tell his friend to avoid her, and he should do the same.

So, in this instance, he seemed to handle it like a Beta, IMO.

The girl is married to one of his friends. The girl also cheats on his friend with another woman in some exploratory lesbian affair. The guy in the scene is fed up with her behavior (because she is a total wench in the film), and lays into her.

Didn't know that, but, he came across as if he wanted to go on a date with her, like he wanted to bang her. If he wanted to lay in to her, then what was the point of acting interested, and trying to get a cup of coffee with her? What if she would have said yes? Then what would have been his next move?

Actually, by that clip, it seemed like he did. He turned on her only when she turned him down. He was not aloof, his reaction seemed to be a result to her actions.

All this "withdraw your attention" stuff...I don't get it.

If you don't pay her any attention, you are guaranteed to get nowhere.

At least if you act a little edgy with her, you've a chance at hot sex with a crazy chick.

Why would he want to get anywhere with a chick who treated his friend like she did? (not to mention, I guess, she was currently married to him)

You can pay her attention until she proves to not be deserving of your attention. Then you take it away. Much worse than "letting her have it." Which chicks actually like. ----> It's a display that they have the ability to effect your emotions, which shows they have a power over you.

First glance, alpha until she negs and walks away. He was not in a hurry to move things along at this point if social circle.

Given the context he just wanted to rip into her from the beginning and had no interest at all.
