Is the term "trophy wife" used as a shaming tool?

I was reading an article about Rupert Murdoch's wife, in which she is called a "trophy wife." It seems to be that this is nothing more than yet another shaming tool by the matriarchy to make a powerful mature man look like a fool for having such a young wife.

Spot-on. I never really thought of it that way. I think it's also used to shame the relationship in general - it implies a financial/status based arrangement rather than one founded on "love."

Frankly, a wealthy man married to an attractive woman is just how it should be!
