If status symbols, like houses, vehicles, or careers, didn’t exist, what would determine one person’s status?
It seems that status would become a context dependent thing

Clearly, we can’t be at the top in every field, but we can be at the top in our own areas of interest.
For instance, if your passions are drawing, fitness, and comedy, each has its own hierarchy of status.

A student might rank low in all three areas, while a drawing teacher, fitness instructor, or comedy coach would be considered high status in their respective fields. Trying to apply status too broadly, as modern medium, like social media, often encourages, can make it feel impossible to achieve.
Instead of showcasing wealth through cars, houses, or prestigious careers, the main goal for anyone might be just focusing on the circles that matter most and excel there. So to be a leader in your own world of interests.

The same things that they were for thousands of years.

How much land you could take, how much ass you could kick and how much of whatever the most valuable substances or items were at that time and in that place you could own.

For example, at one time salt was worth more than gold. Why? Because it was directly tired to survival by supplying sodium needs for the body and preventing food from going bad.

If I were a woman, I'd consider whether this man has the ability to acquire resources, but also whether he already has them.
