Not quite sure how or why you disagree, because I agree with everything you just said. It's just written in a more elaborate context on your part. But the reasons you provide is simply why things are as they are... doesn't change the fact that it is this way. The end result is still the same.
But it also depends on how you look at it. They might not be "settling", for instance, but look for the qualities that the society embraces, and they themselves possess. Since people don't care much for looks, status, etc, a lot of decent people get together based on their inner qualities. I don't think leagues even exist here, and you don't really judge or categorize others. No one is trying to stand out, or be above the rest. Sex talk and flirting is definitely a lot lower. Religion also down-plays money, lust, and materialism, and focuses on human decency, marriage, and family.
OTOH, you could look at it from the other perspective, which technically isn't false. But the girls might not be acting this way because they have no options, but the society doesn't embrace or condone strong sexuality, competition, viewing people as being prizes or undesirable (based on superficial standards), etc. It's just not the way it is. It's more traditional., and relationship-minded.
I prefer it this way, personally. I was very eligible / of so-called high class up north, but still hated it. You had to more or less pretend to be something you're not to get noticed or accepted, then you had all the shallow, judgemental, overly competitive jackasses everywhere - claiming to be better than you, trying to destroy your rep, nitpicking your flaws, make you feel inferior to them, etc. Bullying was common - even if verbal. And no matter how attractive or social or cool you were - dating was just a big game. Very fast-paced, come and go, looking for the new shiney type of environment. Nothing lasted, and nobody cared. Respect, class, mannerisms, morality, and decency were also very low.
