Depends on your goals. If you want to build more muscle, bulking is more conducive for muscle growth. Then you can cut later to lean out. If you decide to go on a deficit and deprive your body of calories, muscle growth won't be high on the priority list.
Doesn't mean you should eat whatever you want. Either eat calories at maintenance or a slight surplus with a clean diet for the most part
If you're focusing on sports, muscle growth and vanity probabaly shouldn't be a priority. Muscles require more energy and oxygen, so you'd burn out a bit quicker depending on how much you build.
I'd say strength training, like powerlifting or weightlifting, would be far more beneficial for sports. But I don't know if you're playing basketball or boxing.
In any case, cardio is generally king when it comes to sports
