You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

If this girl wants him - she just wants him to MAKE A DARN MOVE. Wether he sounds weak, gay or pathetic she will be jump'N up N down of joy. If she doesn't want him - it doesn't matter how smooth he says it - it will still be no.
Dee-Zy is right, it's much less technique, much more simply having the balls to do it, so ask her if she wants to go out, if she does, great, if not, it doesn't matter, there was nothing more you could have done and at least you found out without wasting any more effort.

Don't ask her out for a weekend date, too much applied dating pressure. Ask her to go out on a Wednesday or Thursday to something light like a comedy club or to fill in for your bowling partner who just canceled.
Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

A close mouth doesn't get fed! I've played that role and you just don't know how much nookie I miss out on. The females even told me aftewards that I could've got some play if I had made a move, but i didn't like a chump. Act man. The only thing she can tell you is yes or no!
