This happened to me fairly recently and now she considers me her best guy friend. How do you recognize and overcome this type of relationship? Don't chase another man's table scraps. Next her as soon as she starts pulling this crap. Ex boyfriend or not, if this girl was even remotely interested in you then you'd be with her right now. If she had high IL in you she would have completely forgotten about her ex by now. Real men don't sit around and wait.
Wait...you're only a rebound if she ****s you because she's upset over her relationship. If she friends you because of her relationship, well, then you're not a rebound, you're just a friend. 
There are ways to get out of the friendzone (as long as you've not dated), but I'm no expert there, so you'll have to wait for someone else to answer.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.
You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.
