About a month ago a coworker l, we'll call him Gary, and I went out for a drink to celebrate a new job he landed in his home country to be with his wife and daughter. While we were out, one of his friends came out to join us, we'll call her Erin. Erin and I immediately let hit it off and had a fun evening.
A few days later my coworker moved and I asked Erin if she wanted to meet to go running (we're both marathoners). We met up, ran, and then got food. We ended up talking for 9 hours at the restaurant/ bar and made plans to meet again.
In between that first meeting we exchanged a ton of texts and phone calls. She initiated most of these interactions. I found out through one of these calls that Gary and her had been living together and she had not known about his other life abroad.
We hung out last week and hooked up, but didn't have sex. She initiated this after displaying a ton of IOIs. There seemed to be a ton of chemistry and she told me she really liked me / couldn't believe it had been so long to find me.
The next day she had a doctors appointment and "got some bad news". She didn't tell me what she found out, but she was deeply upset.
Yesterday she sent me a message out of left field that said she would like to continue to hang out but not hook up until she was over Gary and the fact that we were friends made it tougher. She said she didn't know how much time it would take and that she can't be certain it'll turn into something more, but she thinks it would.
I replied. Thanked her for her honesty but told her it would be best to just let this end now.
She didn't expect this reply obviously and has sent me a three messages telling me how upset she is and how much she'll miss me. I haven't responded.
I really liked this girl, but is it worth keeping alive? Normally I'd say hearing the F word means it's time to gtfo, but the recency of the harsh breakup / doctors results have me questioning things.
