I was at an auto repair place today and the manager there had a thick Indian accent. I had some work done there before so knew them and they were pretty friendly.

Anyway, today I was in a very bad mood because they were charging a lot of money for something after I just spent a pretty penny a few weeks earlier for something else. On top of that, they made me leave work early to get there before closing, else they'd charge me a storage fee for the evening.

The manager noticed I was upset (in fact, the first thing I told him is I want my car out of here, I'm not spending any more money on this car). He called his boss and they decided they could knock the $475 bill down to $325, because I was a returning customer and was cordial last time. I said that was still too much, so we discussed other options, and consequences for not repairing, etc.

Anyway, what was strange about the entire conversation is that he was yelling the entire time, like he was mad. It sounded like he was ticked, but actually what was coming out of his mouth were very good negotiation tactics. I stuck around for about 20 minutes deciding what to do, and it appeared that's pretty much how he talked to everyone.

Have any of you ever encountered situations like this, where their voice clearly did not correlate with what they were saying?

might be a cultural thing. I used to have a taiwanese friend, and whenever I went over to his house, I always thought I was about to witness a murder, they were screaming at each other so much later I asked him what they were talking about, and it was like what time is dinner, and other mundane stuff.

Sounds like my boss - and he is born Canadian (for many generations)

I just think that there are some people who just can't control the tone of their vice as well - and don't realize how they come across.

I've had many arguments with my boss because of this. I thought I was being yelled at (something I don't particularly care for), but that was jus not the case.

And then I realized that he was talking to everybody with that tone (even his wife).

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.
