telling the friend to hook you up usually mean showing direct interest, her friend is obviously gonna tell her, if shes already attracted to you it might be good if you play it cool

Puts it in a dating frame and you won't get any for awhile. I'd say its a rather bad idea. Go approach for yourself and convey your personality.

If you're too shy to make an approach, get the girl's friends to hang out with you and bring her along.

"Hooking people up" is plain retarded. I refuse to do it for my friends, and I refuse to ask people to do it for me. It's basically saying "I'm too scared to spit game by myself, so I'm using your friend." I only use friends for introductions, then it's my game.
