Obviously I will start with a bit of idle chatter, as in: How was your day, how was your week, got any plans for the coming week, any plans for the summer, etc. The point here is to determine which type of girl she is: A more introvert that will speak less, or more extrovert that will gladly talk the night away.
First: Shy type of girl
After I asked her the basics, and she has given me brief answers, I lead the conversation where I want too. I do a lot of hiking, and I have some pretty insane stories to tell, that can last anywhere between five to fifteen minutes. I'm also a decent storyteller, since I try to build emotional responses when I talk. So I'll ask her a question like:
"What's the craziest thing you've done last summer"?
I pretty much don't care about her answer by then, because I know it will be boring and she won't say much; she isn't comfortable enough yet. She will answer me, I'll elaborate a bit, but it will quickly die off. This is where I use the question to my advantage.
"I tell you, this summer has been crazy for me. You know the kind of summer that blablabla... One thing I remember, blablabla". If you are a good storyteller, it'll warm her to you, and hopefully she will be more open after. It's also a great way to add kino. A typical thing I will do:
Put my hand on her forearm and look at her straight in the eyes, and say in a serious tone: At this point, I swear to god, I have never been so scared in my life. You know when you feel your heart pounding through your whole body, as if it wanted to rip off... That's how I felt". Or whatever...
The important part is: You create emotion, and you create a connection with the kino.
Second: extroverted type of girl
This is so easy it should be illegal. All you got to do, the only thing, is listen! Seriously, that's it. Listen to what she says, grab cues for further conversation, elaborate appropriately, and lead the conversation where you want it to go. Here's an example (obviously don't be as robotic as that, but you should get the jist).
Me: So did you travel anywhere this summer?
Her: Yeah! I went to Peru for three months, it was such an awesome experience, [blabla] I actually went to the Macchu Picchu [blabla] met with so many locals [blabla]
Ok now you got two cues: Ask her about the Macchu Picchu, ask her how she found the locals
Me: Oh wow seriously, you went to the Macchu Picchu? This, right here, is my jealous face (pull a smirk to make her laugh... She's extroverted, remember? she will laugh). How was your experience?
Her: [blabla] I did X, Y and Z, [blabla]
Now you have four cues: X, Y and Z from this conversation, or if she didn't offer much details because her experience sucked, you could go back to the first branch: The locals. Let's say you want to lead the conversation to a more sexual tone:
Me: I'm curious though, when you met all these locals, here you have a white chick probably strolling around in tight short shorts and a tank top, you must have had so many guys hitting on you. How's the female population though? Any hotties if I plan on going there one day?
Ok, not the best example because you are openly acknowledging that she his hot, thus ego boost and whatnot, but you get the drift by now?
Edit: This comes with a bit of practice, and this is why it's important to have interesting things going on for you. If the girl doesn't talk much, you can fill in the voids
