What makes them screwed up?

Attachment disorders/emotional neglect from early childhood, getting their hearts broken by a woman they truly loved who betrayed them. Those are the two major things I consistently observe.

The result is emotional detachment or compartmentalization and fear of intimacy and often an underlying lack of self love with a need for constant external validation.

Often but not always these are men who tend toward dark triad personalities: narcissism, sociopathic behaviors, loss of social mores and conventions if carried to the extreme.

They cannot handle criticism or perceived criticism and they become angry if challenged. But at the same time the hate feeling abandoned if someone they care for leaves because that triggers the old wound(s).

Self awareness is possible but requires facing the shadow self and reaching a place of internal equilibrium and self acceptance, ultimately self love. This is a difficult road however because the real self is so fragile that it is much easier and more comfortable to cover up with the outward facing facade...

And often these men unwittingly cut them selves out from the meaningful connection to another and the intimacy & love they crave on a much deeper level.

So pursuit of pleasure becomes the substitute...until the high it provides is no longer enough or they age such that they cannot pull like they once did. At that point many start looking to pick a good enough girl and settle down.
