Hey guys,
I feel like sharing something that I'm doing with all of you. Just finished my senior year in high school and want to do some self-improvement before heading off to a new life in college.
For a while, I've believed that true courage does not mean that one has no fear. In fact, I believe that fear is necessary for courage to exist, because courage is the ability to face one's fear.
The character of Batman was a big inspiration for me. I really admired how he was extremely afraid of bats, so he exposed himself to them in the most direct way, thus facing his fear and conquering it.
That being said, here's my challenge to myself that I feel might be a good idea for other people as well.
I am going to make a list of everything that I am scared of. I don't know how many items will be on it. Maybe 10, maybe 50. But I will try to literally think of every single thing that freaks me the fwck out, no matter how weird.
I will rank the list in order from least fear to most fear. Then, time to get working. Like Batman did with the caves, I will expose myself heavily to each fear down the list, one at a time.
For example, I do still have an irrational fear of being alone in the dark at times. To expose myself to this, I will lock myself in the darkest part of the house (our basement) one night after my family's asleep, and stay there until I conquer the fear and am able to fall asleep.
Not every fear on the list will be practically possible to intentionally expose myself to, such as death, or death of someone I know. However, I will try to get through as many as I can.
Some of the fears might be less tangible, such as "fear of failure" or unaccesible, like a fear of snakes. Fine. I'll leave those there for now, and maybe someday I'll have an opportunity to confront them.
Courage is the ability to face one's fear. I want to find out how much courage I have.
