Both of these statements are true. Neither of these situations is more pathetic than the other. The dudes in your lair wear that sh!t because Mystery told them to. The dodes I saw this weekend wore that sh!t because society told them they wouldn't get made fun of if they wore it. At least wearing weird stuff in public requires some courage, regardless of how effective you think it is.

LOL, yeah, sure. Only difference being those guys at the seminar went out of their way to look like freaks; those guys you saw over the weekend threw on what was in their closet.
