Is there anyway to retrain mercenary units?

Not that I know of in RTW.
I know that if you have two mercenary units, and one takes half the amount of losses, and the other unit does as well, you can drag the other unit card onto it to make it full again, on the campaign map ofcourse.
In MTW2 it is well possible to retrain them.

i get bored of it after about 100 turns because, its just same same **** over and over and over
build army,
infantry up, circle around calvary, flank charge, enemy army routs, repeat
it takes me a few months between plays before i want to play it again

Love the Total War Series but Shogun Total War kept crashing on my PC about an hour and a half into play. Medieval Total War I tried to play but keeps crashing to desktop at the intro screen. Rome Total War I can't consider yet till i get a faster PC although eventually I plan on getting the Total War Eras boxset.
It probably doesn't help that my game PC is running Windows ME.
In Medieval Total War, the voice of the narrator sounds very familiar.
