In a society where famine was a regular phenomenon (i.e. most ancient societies), being fat was a rare accomplishment and an indicator of great wealth and status. In contrast, in a society where food is abundant, fetishized and largely unhealthy (modern-day America), NOT being fat is an accomplishment.
