I was thinking of growing my hair out because of the style of music I'm into. I also play in a band. I think it looks pretty badass when I see guys with long hair. But the question is, what would a woman think? Would it increase or decrease my chances with her? I was thinking of parting it down the middle and growing it down to my shoulders.

What I have learned...not all people with long hair looks good on them. However, what looks good on most men is shaved hair.
You want some details? I know a lead singer for a local rock band that plays for money in different restaurants, clubs, ect. He used to have long hair but decided to shave it all off. He's kept it like that ever since due to the fact that he's had more approaches from women now than when he had long hair.
BTW, I've had my hair shaved for over a year now, and I feel I look better this way as well. I dont know if this helps, but I'm just giving you an insight of some details of what I know has worked.

I think GEL is a turnoff, since they can't play with it.
they have a thing for running their fingers through your hairs. (HAHA HAIRS).
So if you want to grow it, grow it.
I'm letting mines grow it and so far so good. But make sure that it fits your personality, I know guys who have long hairs and it looks horrible on them...
and don't grow it to please others. sheesh.

If you have strong features, like very large cheekbones, jaw etc long hair will soften them and make them look smaller (can be good or bad)
Generally women do not prefer long hair its more of a nieche thing with rock.
I think it will decrease your options on the whole but if you really want a girl from that type of setting then it can seperate you from the others (I used to have long hair for years)

Over the last 2 Years, I've grown my hair and I have to say I like how it turned out. It may not be super crisp, but THAT'S YOUR STYLE!
You're thinking of changing your style, because you don't like your current one. So did I. This is now my style. People like it - most do. Very often, you even get more interesting (because you do your own thing). A few girls will be appalled, because, well, they don't like it.
That's okay. You polarize. It's a good thing. There will always be haters. But they all kind of respect me for doing my thing.
You will see if the long hair really looks good on you - and it definitely can! If it does, yourself liking your style will do you much more good than having some pseudo-cool standard cut.
If you really want to do it, grow some balls. It's a RISK! Are you afraid? Yep, it may look weird for some time (up to a year). But the point is, you don't care how it looks. Also, what other people think. This would also go well with your rock/metal mentality.
This, in itself, is an attractive quality.
Is it nuts? Perhaps, but I don't regret it.
I won't cut my hair off, only because SoSuave said I MIGHT be getting more approaches... hell it's part of my identity!
