The idea of posting pics of yourself so you can be judged by your looks strikes me as an inherantly female thing to do. Pure validation. Pure attention through looks. We all know that it's in women's nature to crave these things. And so it's no wonder at all that women of all quality are posting pics to hotornot.com. But men? A DJ is too busy living his life to post pics for others' approval. Why would he care what strangers think of his appearance? He can have all the looks and a ripped body, but still be a chump inside. Agreed? And as a potential meeting site, i would think very few hotties are going to want to meet you because, again, they're using the site for pure, 100% free validation. Why would they want to meet you? No, the entire purpose of the site is validation.

It's a conduit for meeting other people. Its all about intent. What's your intent? Is it to get validation? Or is it a means to an end, the end being meeting women to socialize with? There are no absolutes. When you go to work is it because you are going to do something you absolutely love doing (some are yes)? Or are you doing it Partially to bring home the bacon? We don't always do things for one reason.

people, for some reason, think that if they were 'hot' it would solve all their problems in life. they want to believe that they have a body image disorder where they think they are ugly but in real life they aren't. that their low self esteem just makes them think they are ugly.

i feel bad for those folks who get low ratings. i mean, what possessed them to put their picture up there.

This site is just to that people can judge other people, and then make themselves feel good. If THAT person is hot, then I must be too, so my life is really ok.

Same thing with all the worthless talk shows. People compare their problems to everyone elses problems. That's why these shows get the worst of the worst people, and all the issues they have. The viewers think, hey this person has 8 kids and doesn't know who the daddy is, so...my life isn't so bad after all, and they get a temporary ego boost.

It's all BS in the end. People just kid themselves. Don't waste your time with this stuff. 99% of the internet and television is crap.

...and to the original point. Yes, hotornot and the concept of friend's lists on online social sites is inherently female and adolescent. There is at least one practical reason I can think of to put pictures on hot or not. Say you are making a dating profile on match.com or one of the other dating sites and you're going through your photos trying to find the best ones to for your profile. Well, you might one to place them on hotornot first to see which ones get the highest ratings, and then use only those. It could end up saving you a lot of money and wasted time.

Tell you what here is an experiment for you to try since you really dont give a shi? about what others think about you.

go stand in a mall, just stand there for 20mins in one spot and try to remain cool calm and not even consider what others may think about you, regardless you will have these thoughts going on in your head if you like it or not:

Is anyone staring at me?
Wonder if that girl thinks i am cute?

Hot or not is simply another extension of others trying to gain a feeling of importance through what others think about them, which ever way you look at it.

And i meet people like you all the time, normally, ppl who come out with this stuff usually talk in the 'I' subjective, hence its always about 'you' see an example from the post 'I get up out of bed on a morning to enjoy the ride'! I mean does that statement mean anything? (why look on this as negative, why cant you enjoy the ride by the concept i suggest?) Another example is guys that learn this stuff and still cant help themselves, one guy i was out with last night constantly talking about his achievements what he has done, not in the sense of trying to impress but he simply cant help it!

or take two old ladies last week, both talking to each other, but neither listening to each other, both talking about there lives, it was funny to listen, only time they paid attention is when on of the others actually started talking about what the other was interested in talking about!

I honestly don't know where I rank in terms of looks other than kind of general.

I put pictures up for a while on hotornot to get a clue. I've known about it since around the time it came out like a decade ago, but finally decided to see just what a picture of me would get AND to help decide which pictures to put on myspace (yeah i know i'm soooo pathetic that i can get laid off the internet.)

I don't get validation or attention. All i got was people putting numbers. Who knows who is actually voting and why people vote what they do.

And it still didn't teach me anything. My pictures got anywhere from 6s to 9s. They don't vote on your looks so much as they vote on your clothes and the lighting, where the picture is taken, and whether you're a girl wearing a bikini top or a tshirt. Why do so many people vote me 1s, 2s, and 3s while the other half are giving 8s and 9s? Wtf is that about? I'm either really hot or really ugly to a person with no middle ground?

I had a girl text message me today that she got an 8.6 putting her pic on hotornot. This girl in real life is barely above a 6 - not even up for debate or variance of personal preferences.

It's freakin bogus except to the really ugly people who no amount of photo tricks will help.

why not just do something for fun? I remember being at house parties with 12-15 people standing around just rating people and joking about hotornot. that was at least 6-7 years ago. anyone who takes that seriously has issues. anyone who puts up a picture for more then fun or takes it as serious as your taking it has issues. too many psych majors here. jeez. you know some people just do it FOR FUN. for a laugh.
