Yeah man, immediately start to create a huge social network. Like Hey Jose said, get to know everyone you can, especially those in positions of power (resident advisors, hall directors especially). They're so valuable to anything you do on campus.
My first year, I got involved with hall council, which then turned into working with campus wide groups, which turned into me getting to know some of the most important administrators on campus. Even when I was neck deep in sh*t for stuff I was in (don't ask, long story), I had people there to guard my backand stand up for me, and everything worked out ok.
I'm almost done with my second year, and no matter where I am on this campus, I can almost always find someone I know. There's more than 10,000 people living on my campus, so creating networks is very doable, especially early on.
Oh yeah, think about joining a sports team. Every sport has groupies
