I get making eye contact while talking to someone, that is easy, I just look into their eyes when they are saying something.
How do I make eye contact with people I am walking past on the street and greet them with a smile? (Boot camp week 1). When someone is ten to twenty feet away, I usually catch their eyes for a second then either of us diverts our gaze. Then I try to make eye contact again while are about three feet away because it seems more reasonable to say hi and greet them when it is closer, as opposed to being ten or fifteen feet away.
I literally do not have any experience with making eye contact. My grandma told me as a kid that it was not socially acceptable to stare at people out in public, so I made an effort to not look at people for more than a second, and I still find myself doing that. Is it actually socially acceptable to look at someone as long as you smile when they look back???
Some tips would be greatly appreciated.
