Building a music collection?

I don't listen to music much at all, but there are some bands I like. When I do listen it's on the radio in the car, usually. I want to start building a music collection, since when people come over to my place I want to have music to play.

Where do you suggest I start? CDs? MP3s via MSN Music or something? Can you get CDs for cheap nowadays?

Listen to some streaming radio, you'll get a bigger picture of what's out there than your Clear Channel radio clone.

Also, do you have any favorite genre's of music? Rock, rap, punk, opera, techno, bluegrass, metal, hillbilly? You need to figure that out first :)
