I'm not buying to impress the ladies. I was just curious.

I look for a smooth ride and power in a car. I have enough funds to $60 - 70K.
Do you own a house?

Unless you are well off financially, there's no need to spend $60-70k on a car

i'm not one to tell a guy how to spend his money... if he likes nice cars, hell.. i spend more money on expensive clothes than I should, buy clothes I haven't worn yet, etc.. everyone has their vices.

But I will say, buying a CAR, not one to just get from a to b, but a REAL, 50k plus car, without having some serious equity in your house, is asking for it.

that is the difference between making a living, even a good one, and building WEALtH.

I don't like the current 5 that much, so I'll say the M3 or even a used Porsche 911, or the 335i, but if it's between those two, easily the 5. Benzes are overpriced, underengineered, and keep many a mechanic shop in business. Their biggest selling point is the logo - beyond that, you can do far better.

Maintenance still the factor. European cars are considerably more expensive than American or Japanese when it comes to maintenance and repairs.
Well, we were talking specifically about diesel vs. gasoline (engines) and the cost of gas. As far as maintenance is concerned, it has been well documented that diesel's require less maintenance. There's no big secret why; they have fewer parts and are just less complicated.

The overall car I have no comment on.
