Change default ports to something other than default. Do ports search, and use some goofy ports for some goofy game.


In college though, you'd be behind NAT? So slow downloads.

You're probably safer at college than at home, to tell you the truth.

If 'they' were going to track you down, it would be a hell of a lot easier to do so with your singular home internet connection than a school-wide service. Think about it. At home, its either you or one of the few people living in your house, if there are any other people there. At college, the signal just reads "Whatever dorm building".

I had a friend in college last year who downloaded tons of movies that hadn't even came out in theaters yet. We'd get to see all the newest movies at least 2 weeks before they premiered. He would burn them onto DVD's and sell them to people in the dorms. And honestly, the only trouble he'd probably ever get in was putting up signs in the halls promoting his business without getting approval from the RA first.

what i meant was teh school tracking you down. i dl'ed madden 08 and apparently it was 957mb in 2 hours. they sent me an automated warning letter saying i was using a lot of bandwidth and the limit for 2 hours is 3.5 gb (...) and 24 hours is 10gb. i mean i can easily stay within those limits, but ehh.
getting caught means suspension of internet access which is a pain in the ass.
also, my friend said that a year ago 2 guys from UCSD got caught dling ****. they had to pay 50k each.

It wasn't too many years ago when the RIAA was targeting campuses directly. It may not be as easy as finding a home computer but the manner of finding a computer on campus is practically the same. The school is the ISP and if they know that a certain type of traffic is coming from a specific ISP, they would just need to let the ISP know that either they help them identify the rogue computer(s) or be sued themselves.

You can probably manually set the max download times with whatever BT client you're using...so just try to find out the maximum allowed bandwith you can use, and set your maximum downtime to under that limit. Yeah, it sucks having to cripple your own down times, but you'll still get your stuff with less chance of getting caught.

Other stuff you can do to increase security
1. Encrypt your traffic (although this slows your downtimes)
2. Use an IP blocker (like PeerGuardian 2) to keep hackers, spammers, and those friendly folks from the RIAA/MPAA from sniffing around.

All computers can be tracked by looking at the IP logged in. If you think you cannot be found, just try posting some kiddie porn somewhere and see if the FBI doesn't bust through your dorm room before you know it.

Here at the University of British Columbia the only real restrictions that are enforced are the 5 gigs every 24 hours, but you can get around that by changing your MAC address and resetting it.
To be honest, this is the only place I'd consider downloading anything more than music. I download all the tv shows, movies, etc here and share it during the year. A good program that I know a lot of campuses have set up is DC++. Look into it and see if someone has it set up on campus.

yea i know about ip filters, that pushes away like 99% of riaa asses.
from what it seems i dont think theres much problem, or there hasnt been problems of ppl downloading so far.
i didnt know you can manually change your mac address. maybe because i weas under a static ip all my life. maybe its different here.
as for the limit, that's merely the limit. i'm just curious as to whethere they see 3.44 gb dl in 2 hours, so they look at transfers through my id and if they find copyrighted ****, then bleh.

Doesn't matter. Many colleges have (hard to enforce) rules for not taking part in such acts. However when pressed, they will give up the student(s) quicker than a heartbeat which has even worse consiquences.

Well hell, I can't seem to be right in this thread, lol. I'm just gonna jump out before I say something really wrong.

But I'll tell you this: If 'they' wanna bust you, they'll find a way to make it happen. Intimidation, bribes, reputation bashing, some kind of influence will be placed upon your college or whoever else may be in their way, and they'll get to you.

Its all to make a good news story and to scare other kids just like these into stopping what their doing. I dunno how well it works though. Kids think their invincible; That it won't happen to them. I'll admit it, I'm guilty of this same thing. A story like this doesn't scare me into giving up my downloads. That's probably not very smart. Oh well.

I don't download very much anyway. I haven't downloaded anything in the last 4-5 months or so. And I only ever do it for myself, I don't share anything. If I got busted, even though I suppose I'm guilty, I'd feel like they're wasting their time with me. I'm hardly a huge threat to the recording industry. I probably have ~300 songs total. If I didn't download songs, I wouldn't be buying CD's anyway, so its not like I'd be adding to their revenue if I couldn't get it free. Maybe that's a backwards way of thinking about it.

Anyway, those kids were sharing a lot of material, probably selling it. That's where they really got busted. They don't have the rights to sell those artists' material.

fwiw my roomate in the dorms (back in 03 or 04) was downloading movie torrents from our room, and got a cease and desist letter from Universal that ended all that.

I'm still not sure how they tracked him down, but whatever.
