I'm not sure how many have been married for a long time here but after being with someone that long, freedom is worth far more than any reasonable financial losses you may incur(as in Gate's case). You can always make more money later but you can't always gain more freedom by being with someone.

For those never married, it's hard to grasp the dynamics of a long term marriage. Eventually most drift apart but some just continue live with each other. The ones better off financially have options to split that others don't.

I'm sure Bill and Melinda both loved(or love) each other but people sometimes grow apart. In their case, I'm not sure how much ill will there is to each other. Some just end amicably with both sides wanting the best for each other.

It's easy for outsiders to judge or think they know something about them and their life. My $.02
